Workplace Discipline

Disciplinary rules are necessary in any organisation to communicate the expected standards of behaviour and performance of employees. Workplace discipline helps you, the employer, to run your business effectively and, more importantly, provide guidance to employees on what the Company expects from them at work, and even outside work in some cases.

As an employer you are required to give guidance on workplace discipline expectations. You must provide written disciplinary rules for employees, telling them what behaviour you will find acceptable and what is unacceptable in the workplace. You should also set out the consequences for your employees should they not reach these standards, especially what behaviour might result in their dismissal from the Company.

You are required to make sure that your Disciplinary Procedures, at the very least, comply with ACAS guidelines.

Do you have written disciplinary guidelines that you’ve issued to staff? When did you last review them? Are they legally compliant?

Are you thinking about taking disciplinary action against an employee?
